Cirque du Soleil's CORTEO Kicks Off Its U.S. Tour in New Orleans!
After breaking records and thrilling more than 8 million people all over the world, Cirque du Soleil's CORTEO is coming to North America in March and has chosen New Orleans to be the first stop on its 2-year tour. From March 2 to 4, 2018, the much-anticipated show will visit the Smoothie King Center for a limited run of five performances. Variety promises laughter, chills and all around amazement. They wrote, "Send in the clowns, especially if they're this good!" We can't wait to experience it all.
CORTEO, which means cortège or procession in Italian, is about a clown who watches his own funeral take place in a joyous, festive, carnival-like atmosphere, while being watched over by caring angels. The show was inspired in part by The Grand Parade: Portrait of the Artist as Clown, on display at the National Gallery of Canada.
According to a press release, CORTEO brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music, by turns lyrical and playful, carries CORTEO through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.
