New Orleans has always been a bit different. We parade down the street more than we probably should, and we get our drinks to go. It doesn’t matter if you’re prim and proper or offbeat and quirky, there is a place for everyone in this city.
Fringe Fest, which starts Wednesday, is the perfect embodiment of that sentiment. The festival is made up of offbeat performances that you won’t see during run-of-the-mill performing arts festivals around the country. Whether it’s comedy, improvisational performances, dance, drama, puppetry or even just storytelling, everything you attend will be uniquely produced and performed. It’s different. It’s “the fringe.”
Wednesday through Saturday, over 77 groups from across the country will be performing at various venues around the city. Do your research before you buy a ticket to a performance, since some may be more adult or kid-friendly than others.
There will be performances, magic, art events and workshops geared specifically toward kids at Family Fringe, which is free. Just bring the kids to the Marigny Opera House at the corner of Dauphine and St. Ferdinand Streets on Nov. 23 and 24 between Noon and 5 p.m.

For most of the shows, you have to buy tickets. There are quite a few free events, though. Here is a schedule of the “free for all” events. The list includes after parties, Parade HotSpots, the Friday Night Fringe Party, Spoken Word (great local poets read aloud) and more.
